Love this illustration, spotted it in the YCN annual last year and now it fits into the project I’m doing at the moment. My ‘design bible’ brief is to create a visual explanation of my chosen belief/rule/commandment when it comes to design. I’ve chosen to focus on ‘Making mistakes faster’ which is featured in Bruce Mau’s Incomplete manifesto for growthMaking mistakes is learning and growth, so the more we make now the less they’ll happen in the future (well at least not the same mistakes anyway!)

Sketchbook notes, Initial ideas

Really excited for the project I’ve got this week! I chose to do Design and Interaction with Kira Salter. The brief - ‘Visualise the sound of music’ is to create a piece of graphic communication visually describing a song of our choice. With my badgirl music taste I went and chose ‘Jay Z - dirt off your shoulder’, since I’d be working with this for 2 weeks I didn’t want to choose something I’d get sick of easily!!
This got me thinking about rapper hands, yes rapper hands. Or hands gestures to music in general, and how they can illustrate or emphasize the lyrics or mood of a song.

Initially I thought I could look at the rhythm or size of the soundwaves in the song and somehow they could translate into a hand gesture?

After feedback on Wednesday I realised that’s complicated and should either be focusing on the rhythm on its own or the speed. By looking at speed I could try and translate the lyrics in various ways. Visually showing difference in speed between each one. This got me thinking about sign language which is all about the visuals! If I could show the song in sign along with other forms of communication that can be seen (like texting for example) then I could describe the speed of the song as well as show the difference in speed between forms.
